Z IS FOR ZOO

For each letter of the A to Z, I'm going to give you a KEYWORD. You post in the comments a song with that word in the title. I will give you one to start (along with a video). If you like, you can go to YouTube and embed your video in the comments, so that readers can also listen to your song. No repeats and only post one song so that everyone can participate. If you're just brimming with songs, come back in a few days and lay it on me! If you want to see who else is participating in the A to Z click here.

Kids, it's hard to believe, but this is the FINISH LINE. We're at Z. Some keywords were harder than others, but overall you guys rocked the "keyword challenge." In fact, I loved this so much I just might do it again for the A to Z next year. What do you think????

Yesterday's keyword: Year(s). Here are the songs you thought of with Year(s) in the title:

Y IS FOR YEARS

For each letter of the A to Z, I'm going to give you a KEYWORD. You post in the comments a song with that word in the title. I will give you one to start (along with a video). If you're just brimming with songs, come back in a few days and lay it on me! If you want to see who else is participating in the A to Z click here.

You guys did great with the last keyword: Stop. Some of you really wanted to play around with the letter X (and I apologize for not being more obliging by providing the ideal X word... ;). In any event, you know that the rules aren't hard and fast here, so you just did as you pleased and posted a song with X. Or a band that started with X. Whatever. Ha! Anyway, here are the songs you thought of with Stop (or X somewhere) in the title:

Mary: Stop! In the Name of Love by The Supremes
Michele: Stop Stop Stop by The Hollies and Don't Stop by Fleetwood Mac

Yesterday's keyword, Valley, turned out to be harder than I anticipated. I never know exactly how it will play out because you guys always think of songs 1) I've never heard, or 2) I forget about until you post them. T IS FOR TIME (and BotB results)

Before we get down to business, I've got to share the dismal results for Battle of the Bands. No worries. This will be quick. The song was Her Man. I made the mistake of putting a cover against an original, which is rarely a good idea. Definitely not a good idea in this case. Waylon Jennings vs. Gary Allan. Poor Gary got his hat handed to him by Waylon. Gary only got 2 votes to Waylon's 15 votes. Congrats to Waylon on stomping the competition so thoroughly. I'm hoping that the battle on the 1st is more of a horse race and voter participation amps up to normal. Moving on...

For each letter of the A to Z, I'm going to give you a KEYWORD. You post in the comments a song with that word in the title. I will give you one to start (along with a video). If you're a fan of Soundtracks, Andrea over at Maybe it's just me... is doing her A to Z on them. Ironically, I think our posts have a possibility of colliding today. I first discovered this song on the Pretty In Pink soundtrack (notice it's also a "P"). I wore out that cassette tape. The last song on the soundtrack was Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths. The song is a bit blue, but then I tend to be a bit blue, too. So, it works out. As it turned out, about two decades later another movie decided to use this gem (500 Days of Summer). That is the movie featured in the clips set to the song *I still love* featured below. So... drum roll... I present to you.... Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths.

And, this one is for Birgit who loves dancing and movies and has tried valiantly to play along with my Song Game (and has done much better since she's started working her movie knowledge into her strategy here). This was not in the movie 500 Days of Summer, but it was intended to promote the movie... sort of. Anyway, it's awesome and I think she, and other lovers of dance, will like it. Sadly, there is NO connection to the letter "P."

O IS FOR OVER

For each letter of the A to Z, I'm going to give you a KEYWORD. You post in the comments a song with that word in the title. I will give you one to start (along with a video). If you like, you can go to YouTube and embed your video in the comments, so that readers can also listen to your song. No repeats and only post one song so that everyone can participate. If you're just brimming with songs, come back in a few days and lay it on me! If you want to see who else is participating in the A to Z click here.

Before I proceed with the list from yesterday, here's the health update: I still feel like junk. My best-laid plans of getting caught up on the blog ended up sacked out on the couch watching TV and napping. I can't say that I'm sick, but I'm not well either. I'm in that in-between place. I'll either recover or I'll be visiting the doctor. I'm voting for recovery. So, again (and still) my apologies for being less than my best self on this blog. If you want to vote on Battle of the Bands, go back one post to M is for Man.

You guys did great with yesterday's word: Night. Here are the songs you thought of with Night in the title:

M IS FOR MAN (COLLIDES WITH BATTLE OF THE BANDS AGAIN!)

Today is April 15. For me, that means two things: 1) The A to Z is kicking off (and I have a FUN idea this year), and 2) It's Battle of the Bands (which walks hand in hand with my fun A to Z idea).

So, let's get down to it.

It's a new day and a new letter!

Today I'll be combining the challenge with Battle of the Bands, which pits two covers of the same song against one another. Listen to each and then vote on your favorite. Approximately one week later, I'll tally up the votes and post the winner based on your votes.

What is the KEYWORD?

That leads to my choice in song: HER MAN.

I'm only aware of two recordings of this song. I'm sure if there are others, you guys will tell me! Interestingly enough, I was very familiar with Gary Allan's version of Her Man and up until about a year ago thought it was his song. Ha! Stephen T. McCarthy is a huge Waylon Jennings fan and sent me a link of some of his favorite Waylon songs. Turns out, one of the ones he sent me was Her Man. I didn't tell him about Gary's cover (because I knew this day would come eventually). Let's get to it...

First up is Waylon Jennings:

VS.

Gary Allan:

Please vote for the version of this song you prefer. If you want to get into the Ins and Outs of why you like one better than the other... I LOVE long comments!

For more Battle of the Bands fun, check out the other BOTB bloggers to vote on their battles:

Did you vote? Did you post a comment with the keyword?  You can post just the song and artist who sang it OR you can embed the video by copy/pasting the code in the search bar. You can also use variations on man like men or manly. It just has to have man in it. Go crazy!

We're going to do something different with the letter J. For those of you who've read this blog for some time, you know that people with names beginning with "J" feature prominently in my life. Turns out, lots of songs are out there with names that begin with "J." Any song with a name that begins with "J" goes. I think there are so many of these that you can post two right from Go.
