Love Is In The Air ~ Stand Up and Take It

It has been a big week! Insecure Writer's Support Group, HERE'S TO YOU THURSDAY, Battle of the Bands results... a lot going on!

Now that the flurry is over, the countdown to V-Day is on. For those of you who need to get inspired, you have SEVEN days.  I am here to help you with that. Inspiration, that is. The romance is on!

**********
I am tagging all of these Love Is In The Air (even though the hop is over) and the following is a list of all the posts with links, so that you can watch any of your favorites that you missed.

Back at the beginning of this thing I asked YOU to share what you think are the most romantic moments on the big and small screen. I posted four of them over the weekend. I will still post them if you share in the comments!

Speaking of comments, some of your comments crack me up! Over the weekend I ran all movies and several of you indicated you'd never seen those TV shows. Hahahaha. I realize I must be more clear about what I am posting, since I am doing both.

************

The TV Show, Grey's Anatomy, is about two things: medical drama and relationships. Particularly in the earlier seasons, I was horrified enchanted with the clever bizarre medical scenarios that the writers brought onto the show. For instance, the episode Crash Into Me is permanently stuck in my brain. It involved a train accident and a pole that speared two people, binding them together (back to back). Two strangers went through the worst trauma of their lives together. And only one lived to tell the tale.

With that build-up, let's concentrate on the romance instead. Meredith Grey (the Grey of Grey's Anatomy) and Derek Shepherd's romance was stormy until Season 5. Okay, it still has arctic blasts, occasionally, but they weather it together. This clip is from that fifth season and I think it is perfect.

Meredith and Derek or MerDer as they are commonly called...

Wasn't that beautiful? We all hope to marry someone who KNOWS US and APPRECIATES EVERYTHING about us. So often people love us IN SPITE OF certain things... or we love IN SPITE OF certain things. When we love someone because EVERYTHING about them is cherished and valued... well, I think that makes all of the difference.

The romance between Lexie and Mark was on a fast track to greatness until she broke up with him. Events from his past came back into play and she opted out. But the thing is... you can want to NOT love someone, but it doesn't really work that way.  So Lexie spends a long time doing everything she can to not love him, and still... This scene ranks as one of my all-time favorites. Lexie finally realizes that no matter what she does, she loves him. And it all just gushes out. Unfortunately, the video will not embed. So you have to CLICK HERE to watch it.

When Grey's went on Winter Hiatus last year it ended with this scene. To give you just a bit of history... Jackson and April were best friends and then they became something else. They ended it because... well, does it matter why? If you watch the show, you know. If you don't... that's enough. Saying something is over and it actually being over... let's just say that maybe Jackson should have paid more attention to the whole Lexie/Mark debacle, because this is a show-stopper.

Jackson and April or Japril as they are also known...

Stand up and take it. If it is worth having, it's worth fighting for. It's unfortunate that we don't know what we want until we are pushed into the corner and forced to look at it. However this turns out... it was very brave of Jackson and pretty darn romantic.

  3. I've never watched Grey's though lots of my friends like it(are nuts about it). Things worth having are worth fighting for.

  4. I watched the Castle/Firefly medley. I loved it. Nathan was so cute back in the Firefly days... don't get me wrong, he's still cute in Castle, but he could lose a few pounds.

As for Valentine's day in real life, it hasn't been the same for my husband and me since we had to put our beloved German Shepherd down 6 years ago. Same thing with our anniversary... September 10th. A pall hangs over our special days.

  5. ROBIN ~
Literally, for days I have been attempting to find the time to post the following to you. I just had to wake up to make an important phone call, but before going back to sleep, which I shall do momentarily, I was determined to finally get this comment posted.

I believe quite some time ago I recommended a romance movie to you because the story takes place in one of your favorite locations... Las Vegas. Not sure if you ever got around to seeing it, so I’m-a try this again.

It was a very simple story [“Boy loses girl; boy tries to win girl back”] and it bombed at the box office. But, in my opinion, there is a lot to like about ‘ONE FROM THE HEART’.

Despite the ultra-simple storyline, the cinematography is as delicious as a box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day. The music, composed by Tom Waits and performed by Waits and Crystal Gayle makes up one of the all-time greatest movie soundtracks ever released (I’d put at #2, just behind Henry Mancini’s ‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s’).

And there are some subtle but (to my mind) very funny scenes, most of them involving Harry Dean Stanton.

Attempting to locate what I consider to be the most “romantic” scene in the movie, I found that no one at YouTube has ever posted it. So I grabbed three other short videos for you instead, hopefully to pique your interest in the movie:

‘ONE FROM THE HEART’ - Trailer

    ‘LITTLE BOY BLUE FANTASY SEQUENCE’

ROBIN, what I personally feel is the most “romantic” moment in the movie occurs just minutes before the following scene (see clip below) begins. I won’t give it away, other than to say that Hank’s woman has just boarded an airliner taking her to Bora Bora with her new lover.

Hank makes that long walk back to his car and drives home. Here are a couple things to consider:

I love the little details in this movie, like for example, the soggy parking ticket that is flapping back and forth under the windshield wiper of Hank’s car.

I said in the beginning that this story takes place in Las Vegas (primarily the downtown section), but it was NOT filmed in Vegas! Every single shot of every single scene was filmed INDOORS on sound stages in Hollywood. Yes! Las Vegas was recreated down to the tiniest details on indoor sets. So when you watch this short scene, keep in mind that the airport, the parking lot, the street Hank lives on – ALL OF IT – was filmed indoors. The airplane? You guessed it... inside a Hollywood set.

And even that alone makes seeing this movie worthwhile. The cost was ridiculous and Francis Ford Coppola went broke making this “bomb” that I still love and still watch at least once every three years or so. And the soundtrack is still one of my most frequently played compact discs.

‘RAINY RIDE HOME FROM THE AIRPORT’

Alright, it’s back to sleep for me! That next “graveyard” shi(f)t is only hours away.

  7. Tara ~ I sent you an email. Hopefully that clears it up.

Susan ~ Me too. Just watching that Jackson/April scene again reminded me that I can't wait to see how that turns out!

    Susan ~ Yes indeed.

cube ~ Nathan Fillian is a handsome guy that could stand to lose a few pounds;) I love the writing on Castle and Firefly... for different reasons. But they are/were both smart shows.

Stephen ~ I don't have Netflix, so I just have a list of movies to watch out for and this is on it. I watched the clips. It looks sad. Is it sad?

Gina ~ If you watch the first season you'll be hooked.

      Is it sad?

Let me ask you a question in reply:
Does a dog bark because it's happy
      or because it's sad?

If you want, I will loan you my DVD copy. I'd want it returned within a month though. If you trust me NOT to be the sort of person Arlee Boid posted his last BOTB about (rhymes with "talker" and looks like "talker" but with an ekstra "s"), you can submit a comment to my blog with an address of where to send the DVD. (You can even write: "Send it to my 6'6" biker boyfriend at the following address...") I will copy down the address, delete the comment - NOT post it - and then send the DVD on my next day off from work. That would be Tuesday.

If you'd rather wait until a butchered version of it airs on TV in the year 2525, that's OK, no hard feelings. (One can't be TOO careful these days in Amerika.)

      ~ Stephen

  8. le sigh. That MerDer clip was too sweet. How could you not fall in love with Patrick Dempsey. I always think of him from Can't Buy Me Love when I was a teen, and I love seeing how dashing he's turned out.

I need to check out all your moments! Most romantic from a movie? I love in The English Patient when the one guy in the turban brings Juliette Binoche's character to the old chapel and pulls her around on a rope to see all the paintings. That one always stuck with me.
And then in The Village when the MC casually mentions to her love interest if they'll dance together at their wedding---and they weren't even in a relationship... and he says he will. *swoon*
Sorry for the undetailed synopses there. LOL

  9. I'd forgotten that elevator scene. It's a classic. Thanks.

  10. PK ~ I will check out those clips! Can't Buy Me Love is one of my favorite 80s movies. Patrick Dempsey has turned out to be a very handsome man. And he is a very talented actor. Did you see him on that TV show Once And Again? He played a young man with autism. I was blown away. He really has stretch as an actor that many people are unaware of... And don't apologize for the clip info... I asked!

LD ~ I know. I just love it.
