Battle of the Bands ~ Wonderwall

Before we jump into Battle of the Bands, I want to take a moment and remind you that HERE'S TO YOU THURSDAY did actually go off on Thursday. I haven't been round to all of the pages of those with dedications, so there could be something there for you!

Love Is In The Air ended yesterday. So many tears of sadness... mostly mine, while some of you are cheering. Finally new content on this blog!

Today is the 15th and that means it is time for another round of Battle of the Bands!

**fireworks explode**

The song for today's battle is Wonderwall (hence the blog title). It was originally performed by the band Oasis and has been covered several times. I am going to share my favorite cover of the song here and let you decide if it is better than the original.

So, let's just listen to the music, shall we???

Take it away Oasis...

Versus Ryan Adams.

Take it away Ryan Adams...

And that is all there is to it. Listen to them both and decide which one is YOUR favorite. Place your vote for your favorite along with a long or short explanation as to the why in the comments. On the 22nd (next Saturday), I will post the results. So, you have one full week to listen and vote!!!!

Other battles can be found by clicking the following links, so be sure to visit them and cast your votes there!

  1. I've always liked this song by Oasis. When I saw who the cover was by I thought "oh-oh", but then I realized I was thinking Bryan Adams. I always get these guys confused. When I started listening to Ryan's version I was thinking it started off kind of nice, but I kept waiting for something to happen and a big build up. But nothing happened except the wimpy little instrumental riff at the end. In all I thought Ryan's version was boring.

On the other hand the Oasis version has a flourish and sense of stateliness that makes the song sound big and important while remaining refined and melodic. I much prefer the original by Oasis.

  2. I have to go with Oasis. I actually like both versions, but the second one is more kooky. Plus the original is classic.

  3. I agree with Arlee Bird on this one.

I didn't know this song beforehand, but I thought the Oasis version was pretty good (even if it did have that "whiny" kind of "Alternative Rock" vocal that tends to irritate me).

The Ryan Adams version definitely had the potential to beat the original, because it sounded more personal and he is actually a better singer than the lead singer from Oasis. BUT... the Ryan Adams version needed to build to a point, instead of just slowly, personally, moving along forever at the same pace.

Had the Ryan Adams version suddenly erupted into a brief but pounding drum solo midway, and then had the tempo and the intensity picked up until the end... he would have won... easily.

But that relaxed pace all the way through? Uh-uh, sorry. Gotta go with the original recording.

  4. I like Ryan Adams. It feels more poignant to me. The only thing it doesn't have is more of a build-up. It would've been even better with that.

  5. Ryan Adams all the way. I was never crazy about the song in the first place, but he made it heartfelt.

  6. I own both of these, and I gotta go with Oasis....while I like Ryan Adams (got everything he's done), his cover of the song is a little too sparse.

Credit to him for a unique take, and maybe I'd feel different if his version had been the one I'd heard first.

But it wasn't. So the brothers Gallagher get my vote.

  7. Hey Robin,

Oasis, no contest as far as I'm concerned. Ryan Adams sounds like a wounded cat.

Wishing you lovely rest of your weekend, Robin.

    Gary :)

  8. Not being familiar with either the song or the artists, I'm hearing it for the first time. New, virgin ears. I'm going with Ryan Adams' version because, like Sherry said, it feels more poignant, more intimate.

  9. I don't like the song, but if I had to choose I would choose Oasis.

  10. I like Ryan Adams' voice, but it's too slow for that song, I think. I like the Oasis version most (and I loved that song back in the day!). :)

  11. Oasis. It's more uptempo. Ryan Adams' version makes me want to sleep.

  12. I never really got into Oasis back in the day, although I'd have to say that Wonderwall was the one I did like best. The first few seconds of the cover, though, had me cringing. It got better to me as it went on- and I would love to hear just the music track to this- but I'll have to say that it really never dug its way out of that first hole and I'll give it to Oasis.

  13. Oasis all the way! Never cared for Ryan Adams anyway. Oasis makes it a happy song.

  14. I like Ryan Adams' much more soothing voice. He gets my vote.

  15. Computer problems dictate that I must comment from my phone, do I'll make it short and sweet.

I like the vocals on the cover better, so give my vote to Ryan Adams.

  16. Oasis was such a huge deal back in the 90s, but I guess the sibling rivalry pretty much doomed the band. I'm going to go with Ryan Adams just because the vocals are WAY better.

  17. I have to go with Oasis. I like the beat better.

  18. Ryan Adams has a great voice and it's much more emotional, but his version is just too darn slow for me. I don't care for that. I like it as a faster song that you can nod your head along to. Score one for Oasis.

  19. This song is new to me, so I had no preconceived notion about how it should sound. That being said, I like the second version better. I like the sound of his voice better, and like the slower more caressing rhythm.

  20. I'm voting for Oasis. I can't really explain why. I just like that song better. Bryan Adams isn't my thing

  21. True Story: I left England to live in America in Jan. 1996.... spent a few weeks with a buddy of mine in Fairfax, Va. Having made plans to move to Key West, Fla., I knew I'd miss the upcoming concert by this British band... and I *TOLD* my buddy he *HAD* to go see them as there was no way he'd ever see them again in such a small venue (local college theater)

Of course, my buddy missed out on seeing Oasis on their first U.S. tour and I still rag on him to this day :)

  22. i have been tired of oasis for a while... i listen to alternative, so they play them a bunch. i like ryan's rendition =)

  23. I have to go with Oasis - maybe because I rocked out to this song quite a bit in it's day. Ryan Adams did a nice job, but I gotta stick with the original. ;)

  24. Ryan Adams gets my vote. He makes the words sound more like poetry. Thanks for the reminder that I could still vote. Converting to a new laptop has drained my brain. . .
