HERE'S TO YOU THURSDAY

Drum roll please.

It is Thursday and that means it is HERE'S TO YOU day!  All in all, the best day of the week here on YOUR DAILY DOSE. Why? Because it's a celebration for YOU.

If you don't know what this HERE'S TO YOU stuff is about, let me explain.  This is a weekly event landing typically on Thursdays.  The best (or worst) part is that I am not going to explain why I chose "whatever" footage for each of you. If, you watch your footage and are scratching your head at the end, well that means I didn't do a very good job. However, all is not lost. You can email me at rarichards68@gmail.com and ask me what I was thinking when I chose that particular piece of footage off of youtube and connected it to you. And then I will tell you. Then I will start sending up prayers that I haven't offended the crap out of whoever is on the receiving end of that email....lol. Because, honestly, I will tell you right now... I admire all of you enormously so I really hope that doesn't happen.

Also, this is not an exclusive venture by any means. I hope that you will take the time to watch ALL of the footage because I don't pick bad footage:-) I also hope that you might check out the blog of the person I dedicated the footage to because they are pretty darn awesome. If you haven't figured this out yet... I pick the footage based on something that you've written or something that I've gleaned from your personality. Think on that for a while... If you are having trouble watching the entire video (meaning it is being cut off on one side), click on it a couple of times and it will take you straight over to youtube. If you click on the four squares at the bottom corner of the video, it will enlarge it to fill your screen. The escape key will bring it back to normal size. The back arrow will bring you back to my page.

Now, let's get this PARTY STARTED!!!!

This one is for everyone:

This one is for Al Diaz at Father Dragon Writes (Who is Mark and who is Alex?):

This one is for DiscConnected:

This one is for Gossip Girl at ~*~Whatever~*~:

This one is for Stephen T. McCarthy at FERRET-FACED FASCIST FRIENDS:

  2. Exactly! Even the word research has been replaced with Google. I spent my young life reading Caesar's Commentaries on the Gaelic Wars in Latin.

  3. Now THOSE are wedding vows that depict today's American couples!

I know of someone who, on her second marriage (she's had four-got rice scars on her face!) who changed the "standard" vows to "as long as you both shall love."

I think the vows should just say "until the novelty wears off." That seems to be the average duration of marriage these days.

Or maybe, "until the game starts" or "until something better comes along."

To heck with all that traditional "death do us part" stuff. Why should you commit longer to a spouse than you do to a car lease?

  4. Manzi ~ I totally stole that clip off of your blog a while ago. It has just taken me this long to use it. Thanks for the "share."

JJ ~ Yes, I knew you'd get a charge out of that one.

LC ~ I chose this clip based upon your post (obviously). This was a great movie, if you haven't ever seen it, that wasn't actually so much about having a baby as it was adjusting to being married. We could have a very long discussion about where society took the turn on marriage and commitment to it. I like this bit with the vows because, even though this is just his imagination (as evidenced by the fact that no one else is hearing what he is), he still agrees. He says yes to being a provider, yes to remembering the little things are important, yes to listening to stories about things like decorated checkbook covers. Isn't that what people forget marriage is about on that big day? It's all rosy and glorious and BIG. But the day-to-day of marriage is mostly small stuff. Maybe if the vows weren't so lofty and people had to agree to put the toilet seat down, remember to refill the toilet paper dispenser, write things on the grocery list when you used the last, compliment your spouse on what they do right, be willing to change those dirty diapers, etc. the importance of the moment might sink in. This is hard. It's every day. Or maybe that wouldn't help, either. I don't know. I am no expert!!!

    1. And I am certainly no expert, either Robin...the last time I seriously was entertaining marriage, a co-worker said to me:

"You seem to be looking for reasons to marry her...you should be looking for reasons not to marry her."

I did not quite get what he meant until after we split, and I saw all of the things that would have become big deals that I was rationalizing away.

But for the record, my quip about the car lease is a joke, and I think marriage is a great idea, but not so sure it would have been a good idea for me.

For any readers happily married, power to ya, and for any who are looking, don't pay attention to my jokes-wasn't it Todd Rundgren who said "love is the answer?"

Just make sure you ask the right questions!

    ROBIN ~
Wow, Hokey-Smoke, Hoo-Wee, and every other exclamation I tend to use! You are an absolute gem, and that video was priceless, too!

I thank you so much! I can't believe how quickly you jumped on that. Plus, that video was on-target in so many ways that it's hard to believe. I mean, just the basic theme to begin with, then add in the Biblical references and the image of a rocket (bullet) in the Moon's eye, which I also used in my post, and... several other things that I've already forgotten, but noticed. That was AMAZING! You came up with that video idea within 24 hours?! Sheesh! You're a genius!

Aside from all that, I want you to know that I LOVES ME SOME ANDY KAUFMAN (as well as Paul Harvey). Kaufman too was a genius, and as I type these words, my DVD copy of Andy Kaufman on 'The Midnight Special' is beside me (just pulled it from the shelf).

I'm so old that I can remember when Andy first came on the scene - I was lucky enough to catch all of his earliest nationally-broadcasted skits, well before he became a regular on the TV show 'TAXI'. I recall his earliest exposure, when he was doing the impersonations bit and nobody knew what to expect: "And now I want to do dee Archie Bunker: '...You Meathead you!... Thank you veddy much!" And then he goes all "Elvis" on us, and we're left thinking: Shit! This guy is GREAT, and the joke was on us!

R.E.M. -- I really had no idea who they were until they backed up Warren Zevon on his 'SENTIMENTAL HYGIENE' album, which is damn good, in case you haven't heard! As it says in the liner notes of my CD copy: "In 1987, 'Sentimental Hygiene' was for Zevon what the 1968 TV special has been to Elvis Presley." And now we've come full circle, haven't we? Now we're back to Andy Kaufman and his Elvis impersonation, and Jim Carrey playing Kaufman in the movie 'Man On The Moon', and my blog bit about the fake Moon landing, and... What's that thing about everyone being 9 degrees from Kevin Bacon, or something like that? Damn! I believe in that! Except maybe we're all just 9 degrees from Andy Kaufman (or is it R.E.M.?), who was 9 degrees away from sanity and only 2 degrees away from Kevin Bacon.

OK, I'm confused. As I said in my blog's Comment Section, I was only a straight "C" student in high school, and I never done went to "colluge", so "confusion" comes easily to me.

ROBIN, in re-reading my comment to you from last night, I realize that you could have interpreted some of that as being snotty. I hope not, because I respect you, and I was just attempting to lighten the mood over there by consciously trying to be humorous. But, truth be told, Brother Martin (a good man) got me a little worked up. So, my natural sense o' humor may have been strained a wee bit. Hopefully, you did not take anything I wrote in a way that I did not intend for it to be received.

I will gladly tell you later what I believe 'The Wizards Behind The Curtain' had in mind with the whole NASA hoax. But, first, I really do want you to contemplate it on your own. Why? Because I think you'll be surprised how much an individual (in this case, you) can figure out on their own, once they understand the ultimate, Big Picture 'end-game' (i.e., once you understand what the goal is, it's pretty easy to see what the motivation for most moves on the global chess board were/is).

Again, thanks so much for honoring me with this video tribute! It was so spot-on that I can hardly even believe it! Me gums still be hurtin' a li'l bit, but me five-year-old dentist is a godsend, and probably only 9 degrees removed from Kevin Bacon, or Andy Kaufman, or R.E.M.

Before leaving, I want to give a shout-out to my friend DiscConnected. His remark about "rice scars" did not get past me. Google "Tom Waits - Better Off Without A Wife". Or, better yet, just buy the album 'Nighthawks At The Diner'.

      ROBIN... you a gem!

  10. Red Shoes ~ When you meet someone who is in sync with you (and I don't mean the boy band), I think you will marry again. Just choose wisely. Being married is a lot of work. Sort of like a job...

rosey ~ I do believe you're right. He just rolls with it.

Stephen ~ I find it a bit hard to believe that you haven't already heard this song or seen the video.... or maybe you have. BUT, I am glad that you appreciated the finer elements. I thought of it while I was reading your blog bit and KNEW that it would be perfect. What always amazes me about these HERE'S TO YOU bits is how I choose something with a FEELING that it will be perfect and then the receiver tells me all of the ways it was perfect for them. You really wouldn't believe how often that happens. I think of it and know... but so often there is more in there that I couldn't possibly know that is appreciated. For instance, your appreciation of Andy Kaufman is a fine example. I've stopped questioning the HOW or WHY of the way this thing works and am just happy it does.

I wasn't insulted in any way by your comment to me on your blog bit. I think my problem with the answer not being obvious to me is that I am not all that familiar with the intricacies of what was going on in the late 1960s. Yeah, there was Vietnam and the world (at large) may have been hitting a realization that we were printing the dollar far behind the gold we were holding that was supposed to back up the currency. Other than that... I will have to do some digging, I guess. Random thought... if the PTB were taking the pulse on the world and finding them extremely pissed about their gold, I suppose the smart thing would be to make it look like we could land on the moon. Makes for a good power play in the event that the world gets pissy that the US pulled off the biggest con in the history of the world. But, that could be all wrong. I need to do some research.

  13. ROBIN ~

    >>... Stephen ~ I find it a bit hard to believe that you haven't already heard this song or seen the video.... or maybe you have.

No! Never! I'm an honest person and I swear to you that I never head this song before today. However, I have now played it 6 to 8 times and am thinking about buying a CD that includes it. I really like the song, even above and beyond its relevance to my most recent blog bit.

Here's what you need to understand: I am no 54 years old and I stopped listening to "contemporary" radio music in about 1985. "New Wave" was big then, and I had burned out all of the MTV videos.

It was right about then (or maybe a year or two earlier) that I discovered authentic 'Delta Blues", which later led me to Classic Jazz. So, right about the time that MTV was bombarding us with the video clip "I'm On The Mexican Radio", I was in the process of "checking out" from the contemporary music scene.

So, I had no idea who R.E.M. was (and still don't know much about them) until I bought Zevon's 'Sentimental Hygiene'.

I am relieved to know that you weren't offended by my comment to you. Looking back on it this morning, it occurred to me that a couple things I wrote could have conceivably been misinterpreted in such a way leading to the belief that I was denigrating your grey matter. That's 100% off from what I genuinely believe about you. (So much gets lost in translation when we are presenting ourselves as mere words on a computer monitor,)

Keep in mind that I am VERY 'Old School', M'Dear. I mean, I still think of The Kansas City Royals as a "new" team in baseball.

Anyway... I REALLY liked the song, as well as the video they used to portray it, and I am sincerely thinking, now, about acquiring it on a CD,

Well, the sleep aid medications are strongly setting in as I type these words, and I need to get some more sleep before tonight's "graveyard" shift. (Also... my fingers are not functioning anymore on this computer keyboard. So I needs to say: Yak Later, my Friend.

You've not heard the last of me, but you HAVE heard the last of me on THIS day.

Keep up the good work, Sister R. ... Yak Later.

But thanks again. Truthfully, you have just "Made My Day!"

Whoa! I'm fading fast (these sleeping pills really kick in QUICKLY!). Just stood up to go to the "Little Boys' Room" and could barely get out of my computer chair. (It's like I'm intoxicated but without the extra calories!)

  14. Alex ~ I see that you didn't claim one of the dancers as your "own." That only leaves Al to do it for you.... ::living dangerously, I see::

misha ~ I use google when I am working on my WIP, too. It is very handy. Of course, the challenge is to always read everything on the internet with an open mind. Just because it is on the web still don't make it true.

Stephen ~ I wasn't sure when you said that it was new if you meant the video, the song, or both. I see that you meant ALL OF IT. That is so funny about you tuning out contemporary music in 1985. Those were my hs year, so I was very "in." I can't tell you how much time I spent watching MTV. Of course, REM has always hovered somewhere between alternative and mainstream. Some of their most recent material was played mainstream, but their early stuff was considered alternative. I have several of their CDs.... and I think that Man on the Moon was on a Greatest Hits compilation.
I am very aware that things can get confused on paper vs in person. It is often very difficult to convey the message we are striving for in this sort of "conversation."
    Sleep well and talk later!

Jasmine ~ This was a fun week. After I had the first two clips with Kevin Bacon in them my mind started to wonder if I could possibly do ALL Kevin Bacon clips. ha! No, as it turned out. But, it was a crazy half hour or so while I tried!

Julie ~ That clip is really funny and I think JJ appreciated the nod.

Christine ~ Ah... All My Children... that was a show that I watched hit and miss. I don't think I saw this scene when it aired, but Zach was a great character and I really liked him and Kendall together. I also really like JR and Babe, after they divorced and before she was recast. One of my favorite scenes on that show I listened to on the radio while I was driving. Make that driving and crying. I had to pull over. It was when JR finally let go of all the anger he was holding inside and forgave everyone he believed had hurt him. Forgiveness is such a freeing thing. It changes us fundamentally.

  26. I came earlier but it is difficult to comment from the tablet. I certainly loved Footloose. Very good choice, Robin. I would say Alex is Kevin Bacon (provided he would be into this kind of music, hahahaha) and Mark is the guy who does the break dance solo. It will be a great match. I've laughed a lot already and they have not even started dancing. It will be a show to behold.
