F IS FOR FICTION

When I chose Fiction as my "F" word, I really wasn't sure what direction I wanted to take this post.  Was it that I always dreamed of writing fiction?  That I grew up reading fiction?  Well, that is kind of a Duh, no?  Most anyone who dreams of writing fiction grows up reading it.  Then I realized that this was another Circle Story.  What's that, you ask?  Seinfeld did it all the time.  The story started off here, and ended there, and it was actually One Big Ole Circle.  Hilarious.  I look at my life and see a lot of Circle Stories.  Yeah, not as funny as Seinfeld.  Moving on...

When I was in high school, and Oh-So-Certain of where I was going in my life, and my "Career Path," yada yada yada, I heard the story for the first time of my mother quitting college because... wait for it... she couldn't decide on a major.  At the time, I thought this was Hilarious (as in actually Laugh Out Loud Funny), and I told the story to anyone who would listen, and then doubled over, and practically rolled on the floor.  Sooooo funny.  How could someone quit because they were Undecided????  What in the name of Jesus was she thinking?  Bwahahahaha.

After one miserable Freshman year, I came to a very sad and unfortunate conclusion: I was wrong.  I was not going to major in Music.  That was not going to be my Career Path.  My Career Path was now this Blank Slate.  I was void.  So, I took a year of Core Classes, certain that something would come to me; I would find my answer.   I did not.  I finished up my Sophomore year with a whimper.  I distinctly recall sitting in my Guidance Counselor's office, and having The Conversation about "What are we going to do now," since Music was off the table, and I had to declare SOMETHING in order to choose my classes for the Fall.  Egads.  It was happening already;  I had turned into my mother.  Karma is a terrible thing.  It was taking it's revenge.  I wasn't laughing now.  I would never even be able to tell The Story again.  "Don't ask for whom the bell tolls.  It tolls for thee."  Well played, John Dunne.  Well played.

I chose English.  I chose my Major based on the fact that I liked to read. I had nothing else.  All I knew was that I wasn't quitting.  You can bet your sweet (fill in the blank) that I read a lot.  I packed that entire major into two years.  I read and read and read some more.  And when I wasn't reading, I was writing.  Good times.

Since then, I have tried my hand at writing fiction.  If you have read this blog for a LONG TIME you will remember the elation of when that process was going well, followed by the crushing angst of the crash and burn.  What happened?  I discovered that I did it wrong.  Turns out writing fiction is like booking a trip.  You absolutely must know where you are going.  Like a bonehead, I had a story fairly well plotted out, but I didn't have my ending all sewn up.  Now I feel like a moron saying it out loud because it seems... well, obvious.  So, I quit writing where I was and jumped to the end.  But, I could never make the two meet.  I don't think the constant migraine did anything to shore up this problem.  Eventually, my excitement for the project was outweighed by my annoyance.  That was when it got shelved.

Of course, that isn't the first book I have started.  Or the first Idea For An Excellent Novel that has ever burned across my brain.  That is just the one with actual chapters and word count.  That said, I don't fancy myself a Great American Novelist.  I don't have this gift for weaving words together so lyrically that you will cry, though that would be lovely.  I just like to tell a rollicking  fun ride of a story.  Barring that, if you aren't bored out of your mind, I would say it is a win.

Until I muster the will to start again on The Book, this blog is my writing outlet... and I just don't see myself quitting.   Why?  Because it just isn't in me.  Now, that is truth and not fiction.

Fiction Rating: Passion, Phase, and Life Lesson (this one gets the Trifecta)

Are you a fiction or non-fiction reader?  When did the read you become an avid reader?  Have you tried your hand at writing?  If you are a published writer, did you publish the first thing you wrote or did you have several discarded novels lying around before you finally got it "right?"

E IS FOR EUCHRE

Before I begin this A to Z posting, I would like to let everyone know that I did manage to put together my weekly HERE'S TO YOU THURSDAY posting late last night.  It is dedications to approximately six people that I have read over the week, plus one dedication to everyone that I read.  It is just a big shout out to thank all of you for being so darn awesome.  I encourage you to read it.  Many wonderful blogging friendships have been made via the HERE'S TO YOU connection line... or so I'm told.  Plus, it is ever so much fun when one of your bloggy friends is tagged and you so know what that is about.  Hehehehe.  Now, moving on to the "E" post in this series...

If you know what euchre is, you live in the north.  If you don't, you are from the south.  Here I thought the Mason Dixon Line was strictly related to Coors Beer.  Turns out that there is a ban on euchre that is also somehow strictly related to this infamous line.  I don't know about people from the west, since I have never really lived there (aside from one summer in college and that doesn't actually count).  I don't know if people outside the U.S. know what euchre is.  ::scratches head::

Euchre is a card game.

I grew up primarily in Ohio.  I went to college in Michigan.  Folks in Ohio and Michigan are Drop Dead Serious about their euchre.  It could be a sport added to the Olympic Games if they had their vote.

I was very thankful that my parents were avid card players.  Even more thankful that they both played euchre (and were good at it).  These skills came in handy when I went to college.  I went in at the top of my game.  I spent as much time playing euchre as I did studying.  Sssshhh.  Don't anyone tell my mom.  She still thinks I studied A LOT.  And I did, but I offset it with a lot of euchre.  And sometimes euchre with shots.  I don't think that did much for the studying.  Bwahahaha.

To give you an idea of how serious I was about my euchre: I was always a part of the Geek Squad who was playing cards in the middle of some riotous Frat Party.  Usually on the floor.  But possibly at a table.  And sometimes with Frat Boys.  They like euchre, too.  The truth is that beer parties always bored me, so I always carried cards with me.  Euchre anyone?  Pleaaaassseee.   I will take a beer and three for euchre.  I once sat in a Frat House until 6am playing euchre on a Friday night.  Make that Saturday morning.  I was ready for someone to roll me home in a wheelbarrow.

Is euchre the only card game I like?  Heck no.  I was part of a Canasta Club in Georgia for many years.  I also love Hearts, Spades, Pinochle, and would like to learn how to play Bridge.  Of course I play Rummy and Gin.  Blah blah blah.  And the first game my parents taught me was Crazy 8s,  so it has a special place in my heart.

However, I know how to play euchre with partners, three-handed, and even two-handed.  The only way I haven't figured out how to play it is solo.

Rating: Passion ~ Definitely

Do you play euchre?  If so, do you play it like an Olympic Event, Pro Sport, or just a hobby?  Do you know how to play three-handed and two-handed?  Can you play *solo*????  Do you play any other card games?  What was the first card game you ever learned to play?  Have you ever played in a card club?  Do you play in one now?

HERE'S TO YOU THURSDAY

SURPRISE. Drum roll please. It is once again HERE'S TO YOU THURSDAY. Yes, you read that correctly. HERE'S TO YOU THURSDAY is back on Thursday.  For those of you unfamiliar with the once again weekly HERE'S TO YOU THURSDAY posts, I bet you're wondering what is going on. (If you are just checking in for today and looking for my A to Z post, fret not. I posted it earlier and you can find it here, or you can click on older posts and go back one post to read it.) Now, peeps, let me give you the skinny on this event...

This is a weekly event landing typically on Thursdays. The best (or worst) part is that I am not going to explain why I chose "whatever" footage for each of you. If, you watch your footage and are scratching your head at the end, well that means I didn't do a very good job. However, all is not lost. You can email me at rarichards68@gmail.com and ask me what I was thinking when I chose that particular piece of footage off of youtube and connected it to you. And then I will tell you. Then I will start sending up prayers that I haven't offended the crap out of whoever is on the receiving end of that email....lol. Because, honestly, I will tell you right now... I admire all of you enormously so I really hope that doesn't happen.

Also, this is not an exclusive venture by any means. I hope that you will take the time to watch ALL of the footage because I don't pick bad footage:-) I also hope that you might check out the blog of the person I dedicated the footage to because they are pretty darn awesome. If you haven't figured this out yet... I pick the footage based on something that you've written or something that I've gleaned from your personality. Think on that for a while... If you are having trouble watching the entire video (meaning it is being cut off on one side), click on it a couple of times and it will take you straight over to youtube. If you click on the four squares at the bottom corner of the video, it will enlarge it to fill your screen. The escape key will bring it back to normal size. The back arrow will bring you back to my page.

Now, let's get this PARTY STARTED!!!!
