Battle of the Bands Result and Inspirational Song Friday

Hello friends. Today is the 7th and I promised to post the results from Battle of the Bands. The song was Time After Time, made famous by Cyndi Lauper, but she didn't compete. Instead various covers of the original battled it out.

Here is how the vote tallied in the end:

Quietdrive - 7
Eva Cassidy - 11
Miles Davis - 4

So, even without my vote, the clear winner here is Eva Cassidy.

There were two abstentions in this race. In the beginning it was neck and neck among all three participants. Then Eva pulled ahead of the pack and it was all over. It kind of reminded me of that game in the Olympics where the snowboarders raced in packs of six to the finish. And most anything could happen, and did. I can't think of what it was called, but it was very exciting.

My vote? Not that it matters, but I love love love the Eva Cassidy version. I remember thinking it was better than Cyndi's version the first time I heard it. Such a smooth voice and I really feel the song when she sings it. That doesn't mean I no longer have any appreciation for Cyndi's version (or the other covers, for that matter) because I do.

So, if you voted, thank you for your participation. I will be serving cake promptly at 7:00pm this evening to thank you for your service:)

A LONG time ago, I used to run a regular feature on here called Inspirational Song Saturday. It was basically just an excuse to feature 80s videos, because I was one of those teens glued to MTV back in the 80s, and it allowed me to travel to a different space and time. I also posted whatever song was inspirational in the here and now... from any decade. With that in mind (and my post from Wednesday if you read it) I am going to give you Inspirational Song Friday, minus the whacky facts from the 80s. Ironically, the song is from the 80s. Or maybe not so ironically. I think I might be stuck there...

So, are you happy with the outcome of the Battle of the Bands vote? Can I mark you down for cake? Does I'm Still Standing make you want to stand up and run a victory lap? What do you know?.... Me too!

  2. Hi Robin,

I must get a new computer when I move. I have so much trouble getting your site to load up. Sigh....

I'm cool with whatever the outcome with the vote. Eva's version is pleasant. Is the cake going to be served according to my time zone? Actually, maybe I'm not getting any cake. How presumptuous of me :)

I was a big fan of Elton John's very early music. I have a number of his early albums. "Madman Across the Water", being my favourite album. However and sorry about this, despite the lyrics, I cringe at that song by Elton John, "I'm Still Standing."

A peaceful weekend to you, Robin.

    Gary :)

  3. Eva has a very nice voice and I understand her appeal.

"Still Standing" never struck me as an inspirational song. I guess it was the bouncy sound. But I guess from the lyrics it is an inspirational message.

    I'll take some cake.

  4. Probably a good thing you didn't post Lauper's version, as that would've got my vote.
I can sing it as well.
    Bet you didn't know that!

  5. I love cake, and I might pay 2 dollar to hear AJC sing 'Time After Time'. Ha, ha, ha!

With respect to Reggie's 'I'm Still Standing', sometime after it came out someone told me; 'There that's your song'. I didn't know whether to take it as a compliment or an insult. A few decades later, I guess I'll think of it as a compliment.

  8. Love John! I remember when MTV played music; the video's were like mini movies. The 80's were such great era. I know because I was a teen through them too.

  10. Stephen ~ You made me laugh. It's like I said, "Let them eat cake," which I most certainly did not. That would be akin to "having your cake and eating it, too."

Gary ~ We make adjustments for time zones. I counted you as in attendance in spirit. I ate your slice. Delicious!

Arlee ~ Well, we have have already determined that the same song isn't going to suit everyone. Some days you can't please anyone. And that's why there's cake....

Alex ~ I didn't know that you could sing it. I sometimes karaoke Time After Time, too. It is a great song:)

FAE ~ I think that person was giving you a compliment. Take your victory lap with a smile.

Leandra ~ Cake and truth. That is what we bring to the table here...

    Susan ~ :)

Donna ~ I thought about putting the original video up, but the lyrics go by so quickly in that song that some people never understand more than the chorus. But, yes, many videos were very much like 4 minute movies.

Robyn ~ That is okay. You can vote it out next time.

    Happy Weekend Everyone!!!

    Rosey ~ Hip hip hooray!

Sandra ~ I agree. It is is perfect.

  14. Yes! Eva won!

And I love that EJ song, and I can't help but remember the music video when I hear it. It was really such a strange video. People in bright body paint frolicking on the beach. What the heck does that have to do with the lyrics???

  15. Congrats to Eva for the win. I'm getting pretty good at picking the loser. Now you've made me question everything, like my choice in wife and writing partner. And car. Maybe I picked the wrong car. Or car insurance? I could have saved 15% or more by switching to Geico, and yet I didn't...

  16. It doesn't surprise me that Eva won. I still like the trumpet version - probably because I'm an instrumentalist.

  17. Although I liked them all, I really did like hers. Maybe because it's more emotional in a good way. Or at least it was to me.

  18. I love Eva. I will be over next week for cake, because I missed last Friday.
