Battle of the Bands, Migraine City, and Death Knocks

I totally forgot to post the results for the 7/15 edition of Battle of the Bands. Once again, you surprised me. Since the original recording tends to garner the most votes, I thought most of you "older" folks would have voted for Old Crow Medicine Show. I have this theory that we tend to like the familiar. I had never heard the original before, but it was just a bit before my time. Turns out I was wrong about the familiarity factor OR this song just wasn't as popular as I thought for Old Crow Medicine Show... and my "older" voters heard it for the first time here. I am taking the long way around to say that Darius Rucker ran away with this one. Darius got 19 of your votes (add mine to that total) and Old Crow Medicine Show only got three votes. I thank all three of you who voted for them. So glad it wasn't a shut-out. Anyway, there will be something new and different on the 1st for Battle of the Bands -- no idea what yet... but it will be fun!

I also want to take a minute to apologize for not getting round to reading your blogs as well as I would have liked. It has been Migraine City here and just flat-out difficult to do anything. Hence, there is no HERE'S TO YOU post this week. I hope to do better (and feel better) this upcoming week. So, look for it next week. ::crossing fingers::

If you follow Jay Noel's blog, then you are already aware that one of his favorite topics is anything science related. He particularly likes Weird Science. Yeah, I now have that song by Oingo Boingo playing in my head. If you want to hear it, too...

Anyway, that wasn't really where this was going. A while back Jay wrote a fascinating blog bit about kids with black eyes. It was creepy. I loved it. Turns out that his blogging about these kids brought about a collaboration between Jay and Miranda Hardy to write a novel with this premise. How cool is that???? If you didn't read the original post on these creepy kids, I encourage you to do so by clicking HERE.

And now for the ACTUAL BOOK...

Who knew a knock at the door could rupture your entire world? They don’t demand money or possessions…they want much more than that, they want your life.

Maverick is preparing for senior year: he’s no longer stuck in the “friend-zone” with the girl of his dreams, he’s looking forward to choosing the right college and being on his own, and he plans to have a blast along the way.

But a knock on the door changes all of that forever.

Maverick begins a mind-altering, life-changing journey to discover the truth—a truth that certain individuals will do anything to keep hidden.

Death Knocks is a Young Adult paranormal thriller about the strange global phenomenon known as the Black-Eyed Kids. Take a creepy and exciting ride in a world where myth meets reality.
Death Knocks is scheduled for publication on September 26, 2014 by Quixotic Publishing.

  1. A collaboration can be tricky, and it takes special people to do that. Good luck to Miranda and Jay! The premise for Death Knocks sounds like one I wouldn't want to read alone and then have someone knock on my door. . .

I hope to be back for the BOTBs, but take care of that migraine, I get them too.

  2. Hi Robin,

I've seen that trailer for Death Knocks. My goodness, all the elements of dark and creepy. Wishing Miranda and Jay all the very best with the collaboration. From personal experience, I know that it can work very well. A meeting of minds, indeed.

Dear friend, please just look after YOU. The most important thing is that you don't put pressure on yourself. Migraines suck, big time.

    In kindness, your friend,

    Gary

  4. I saw this yesterday. It's an excellent trailer that scared the crap outta me.
Sorry about your migraines. I hope they exit your system immediately, never to return. They're so painful and frustrating. You deserve a reprieve.

  6. Migraines are the worst. I get those only about once or twice a year but it's enough to just cripple my entire day. We hope you feel better soon!

You know, when I read "kids with black eyes," I thought you meant like child abuse. This looks creepy, though, which I like. And we, uh, are fans of collaboration. :)

  8. I guess I am showing my age, but the concept of a "trailer" for books is still odd to me...

I have a couple of titles by Old Crow MS, and sometimes get in the mood for that bluegrass/folksy sound, but generally, the fuller arrangement will win every time.

Plus, Darius has got a voice...

Sorry to hear the migraines are flaring up...come on out to Arizona and we'll fry them out of you...it was 114 yesterday, although it has cooled off...it's only 109 today...brisk!

  9. Rotten about the migraine. Hope it goes away and stays away. I've enjoyed seeing Jay and Miranda's cover and learning about their book.

  10. For me older is not necessarily better, but a song is more preferred for me because of whatever emotion, event, or otherwise that my mind attaches to it. In the case of "Wagon Wheel" it didn't matter--the song was new to me so I had no attachments. I think Larry expressed my feelings in most cases of choosing a preferred song.

  13. Hey all... obviously still having difficulty keeping all of the balls in the air. Happy to report that the migraine is better:) And, LC, hot weather only makes a migraine WORSE. So, no trips to AZ for me. Thanks for the well wishes and all of the commentary on BOTB.

    1. I was jesting-I would not wish this heat wave on anyone-although it probably makes sense that since heat has a tendency to dehydrate, and at least for a "normal" headache, hydration is key, that a dry climate would make things worse.

I have had two very close lady friends that suffered from migraines, and have always wondered if they were gender-specific, but you have enough male readers who suffer from them that I guess that is my answer.

I have had splitting headaches-have no idea if they were migraines, but they are certainly not a chronic problem-and can empathize at least a little.

      Hang in there!

  14. To me, it's no surprise that Darius won. A great version by a great singer. And I'm old enough to be one o' your "older" voters, young missy!

Very sorry to hear about the migraines -- I've known several people who have suffered from them and they can be agonizing and debilitating. I'm sending you warm thoughts and prayers of healing!

And that looks like an awesome collaboration between Jay and Miranda! I wish them much success!

  15. I'm so sorry to hear migraines are still kicking you around. Those things are miserable. (As if I had to tell YOU.) Be well, kiddo.

Jay and Miranda's book sounds awesome! I wish them much luck with it.

    Happy weekend!
