and Stray Cat Strut by The Stray Cats

If you can think of more songs from previous letters and WANT to post them now, feel free to go back and add them:)

Okay, today is May 1. The A to Z is over for the year, but Battle of the Bands is still ON. We play this on the 1st and 15th of every month. Ironically, or maybe not so ironically, you guys gave me a tremendous amount of material for BoTB during the A to Z. So, today I'm presenting you with a cover I discovered because one of you (Pinku-Sensei, I'm looking at you!) used it for the keyword Blue.

The song is Blue Monday. It was originally recorded by New Order in 1983. It was covered later than that (ha!) by Orkestra Obsolete. Since I suspect a good many of you have never heard the original, it seems fair enough to actually pit it against the cover. So, let's get to it.

Blue Monday by New Order:

Blue Monday by Orkestra Obsolete:

Please vote for the version of this song you prefer. If you want to get into the Ins and Outs of why you like one better than the other... I LOVE long comments!

  1. Orkestra Obsolete's version was interesting but my vote is going to the original, New Order. I just liked their version much better.
It's going to seem weird not coming here every morning! :)
    Such a great A-Z theme.

  2. I'd never heard that Obsolete Orkestra version though I'm very familiar with New Order since I used to listen to them a lot and especially like their version of "Blue Monday".

The Orkestra was interesting with the musical saw and all, but it just sounded like a remake to me. The cover was really well done, but all in all I've got to go with New Order's original version.

    New Order is my vote.

    Excellent match up nevertheless.

  3. Robin,

Congratulations on a very successful A-Z theme! Sorry I missed a few posts.

Strange, I don't remember ever hearing this song. Though Blue Monday by New Order is the original, I enjoyed Obsolete Orkestra's version more. My vote goes to them.

    Have a fun battle!

  4. I just can't get past the instrumentation for Obsolete Orkestra, and I am much more familiar with New Order's version. Therefore, I am casting my vote for New Order.

I just want to tell you again how much fun I had visiting your A to Z Challenge. I had a lot going on, and your posts always managed to bring a smile to my face. Thank you for that. I'll have my own battle posted tomorrow. I'm getting back into the 3 days a week posting.

  5. OK this was easy... Orchestra Obsolete.

  6. My vote is Orchestra Obsolete as well! Too techno in the first version. I like the sounds they are producing better than the bouncy-ball first version. Enjoyed your theme, Robin for the A to Z! Made us all remember songs long forgotten and we discovered some new ones. Thanks for the music!

  7. I had more fun listening to Orkestra Obsolete, so I'm voting for them.

  8. I'm glad I read today's entry, as I'm not only mentioned, but it wouldn't have happened without me. Yes, I'm vain. Why do you ask?

I'm going to vote for my contribution, Orkestra Obsolete, even though I think it's likely to lose. Put it up against Orgy's cover, and it would probably have killed.

  9. I don't think I have heard either of these!

  10. GIRL WONDER, I hated the second version less than I hated the first one, so I vote for the 'Talking Heads' wannabes. Er... I mean, Orkestra Obsolete (who thinks they're 'Yakking Heads').

In truth though, the very best 'BLUE MONDAY' is very obviously (Link...>>) THIS ONE.

Oh, OK, so I missed it by one day. Sue my arse for all the nuttin' I own.

  11. I had a blast with your A to Z theme. The fun is over, but I still look forward to annoying you with YouTube and/or image comments.

As for the battle, Orkestra Obsolete was a little gimmicky, but it still made for a fun sound that I liked just a bit more than the original. Give my vote to the Orkestra.

  12. Hey, I got "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey" in at that last minute, ha ha. I was doing good to keep up at all. Pitiful Cherdo...but I got my second wind now!

Don't sue Stephen's arse...you'll end up paying your own lawyer fees.

New Order, I'd heard that one and it's fine but I'd never heard Orkestra Obsolete...and I gotta say, I like that one better. It's different (the good kind of different).

    A VOTE FOR O O!

    Thanks, Robin!

  13. Robin, Kudos to you for getting through A-Z. You had an outstanding idea and not for nothing, I know it took a lot of work for you! Congratulations and I hope you are feeling well.

  14. I actually do remember the original New Order song. Was not a big fan of them, so I gave the second version a fair shot. That's not to say I didn't like it. Because I also don't want to go with New Order simply because I'm more familiar with it. Personally, the second version was a lot more creative. So I think I'm going to go with Orkestra Obsolete.
Great battle this time. Isn't it amazing we are still able to come up with battles after so long and so many participants?

  15. My vote goes to New Order. Was always a fan of them.

  16. This song is new to me. Absolutely loved the Orkestra Obsolete version!

  17. New Order gets my vote, but the second one was quite interesting.

  18. I vote for Orkestra Obsolete. Much easier on the ears.

    Congrats on a successful A-Z

  19. The techno sound in the first version about made me scream (and not in a good way). So give my vote to Orkestra Obsolete. I can't say that I would choose to listen to them over and over again, but their version was at least more interesting. Besides anyone who includes a 'zither' (I own one of those, by the way) in their video has gotta win something.

  20. I vote for New Order. They had me tapping my toes and longing to ask some people how it feels to treat me like they do (I hope I got the words right; I don't remember hearing this song before). They also have a Weimariner in their video. I think I spelled Weimareiner wrong. Still wrong. Wimareiner? Nope.

    Love,
    Janie

  21. First, congratulations on running one of the greatest A to Z Challenge themes. Loved it! ☺

Techno-pop really isn't my thing and New Order didn't appeal, except for the Weimaraner. (Janie, take note ;) ) I'm voting for Orkestra Obsolete. Their unique sound held my interest the whole time.
