M IS FOR MAN (COLLIDES WITH BATTLE OF THE BANDS AGAIN!)

Today is April 15. For me, that means two things: 1) The A to Z is kicking off (and I have a FUN idea this year), and 2) It's Battle of the Bands (which walks hand in hand with my fun A to Z idea).

So, let's get down to it.

For each letter of the A to Z, I'm going to give you a KEYWORD. You post in the comments a song with that word in the title. I will give you one to start (along with a video). If you like, you can go to YouTube and embed your video in the comments, so that readers can also listen to your song. No repeats and only post one song so that everyone can participate. If you're just brimming with songs, come back in a few days and lay it on me! If you want to see who else is participating in the A to Z click here. Special thanks to Arlee Bird and the A to Z team who make this possible!

It's a new day and a new letter!

Today I'll be combining the challenge with Battle of the Bands, which pits two covers of the same song against one another. Listen to each and then vote on your favorite. Approximately one week later, I'll tally up the votes and post the winner based on your votes.

What is the KEYWORD?

That leads to my choice in song: HER MAN.

I'm only aware of two recordings of this song. I'm sure if there are others, you guys will tell me! Interestingly enough, I was very familiar with Gary Allan's version of Her Man and up until about a year ago thought it was his song. Ha! Stephen T. McCarthy is a huge Waylon Jennings fan and sent me a link of some of his favorite Waylon songs. Turns out, one of the ones he sent me was Her Man. I didn't tell him about Gary's cover (because I knew this day would come eventually). Let's get to it...

First up is Waylon Jennings:

VS.

Gary Allan:

Please vote for the version of this song you prefer. If you want to get into the Ins and Outs of why you like one better than the other... I LOVE long comments!

For more Battle of the Bands fun, check out the other BOTB bloggers to vote on their battles:

Did you vote? Did you post a comment with the keyword?  You can post just the song and artist who sang it OR you can embed the video by copy/pasting the code in the search bar. You can also use variations on man like men or manly. It just has to have man in it. Go crazy!

  1. First song that came to mind for me is Phil Collins' 'Man on th e Corner.'

As for the battle, the first version made me think of my mom. She loves Waylon Jennings. I liked both versions, but I like Gary Allan's best. I vote for him.

    1. Oops, I guess it's Genesis with Phil Collins singing. Not Collins gone solo. ;)

As for your battle, Wow, this is tough. I like them both! I really don't know who to choose. I guess I'll go with Waylon, giving it to the original. I really do like Gary Allen's version though so I could've just as easily picked him! Give my vote to Waylon...

    EXCELLENT battle Robin!!!

  10. Waylon. The cover isn't bad, it's just a little too..... I guess modern radio country for me.

  11. Well gosh, one version is about as good as the other, but with the edge given to Waylon. I like his voice better and the mandolin is a plus.

Here's a "man" song by one of my favorite songwriters. Sadly neglected in the United States, here's Murray McLauchlan from Canada:

  12. I'm picking Gary Allan though I feel disloyal to Waylon.

  13. I knew even before playing I'd pick Waylon, but I still played them to give each a fair chance. Gary Allan was exactly what I thought he would be, and Mich summed it up perfectly - modern radio country. Not my thing. Give me Waylon.

When it comes to a man and his guitar, I'm more of an emotional folk rock kind of guy, so today you get some Dallas Green, aka the only dude that can make me weepy when listening to a song (I admit it).

And also one-man-band Kishi Bashi, with a hauntingly beautiful song about something near and dear to both of us.

  15. First: I'll go with Waylon Jennings' version, because I like it better.

Second: "I'm a Man" by Chicago and "Mannish Boy" by Muddy Waters.

  16. Glad you had such a great turnout yesterday! ☺
For BOTB. my vote goes to Waylon Jennings. I prefer his grittier, more masculine vocals.

The first "MAN" song that came to mind was "Simple Man", but that's already taken. Here's one I bet you're not familiar with:

I didn't see this one yet:

  17. My main problem with country is the twangy guitar tuning, and since Waylon is cool and the guitar on that version is a mite less twangy, he gets my vote.

And continuing in the Todd Rundgren vein....

This is a rare instance where I prefer the live version to the recorded version. The album version is a little slower and all synthesizer. This version is from his 1989-1990 tour with a full band and is a bit uptempo and has sexy background singers (the one on the left is Maria Muldaur's daughter and the one in the middle is Todd's wife).

  18. GIRL WONDER, I've felt sick all morning. Even had to put a little trash can next to my bed, just in case. (I think it was the guacamole on chips I had late last night.)

But this BOTB is good medicine. Believe it or not, I'm pretty sure I'd heard the Gary Allan version before. But YOU KNOW how to record my vote. Just listen to that manly baritone voice. Sheesh! Gary Allan does the song respectably but by voice-to-voice comparison, maybe Gary should sing it, "Starting today, all I wanna be is her boy."

I was lucky enough to see Waylon perform this song live a couple of times. And I SO LOVE that line, "I've got a woman who's good enough to give me a second chance again." HA!-HA! I believe that would make it a THIRD chance, unless there were a bunch of other "second chances" given also.

And this song takes on added meaning and humor when a person is very knowledgeable about the real relationship between Waylon and Jessi Colter. No doubt about it, this song is very autobiographical!

I don't think you said we could post two songs today, but since others are doing it, and since I'm such a follower, I'll do it too:

    'TIN MAN' by America

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uJL8er_tV0

And I think you'll agree that THIS song here isn't half-bad...

'I'M A RAMBLIN' MAN' by Waylon Jennings

  19. I'm going with "Rocket Man" by Elton John. Couldn't find an actual video so here's a live version:

  20. This one was hard for me. I only thought of one song but didn't want to go with it due to it's backwards sentiment. But it's charming and was done back in 1924. Don't Advertise Your Man, Clara Smith.

  22. I'm late to this but first off, I am not one f R country but I will go with Waylin Jennings...he seemed to have more feeling in the song. If I chose a song it would be The Man That Got Away sung by the great JUdy Garland

  25. Any other day I've go with Gary on this song. But, can't vote against one of the Four Horsemen. Waylon gets my vote :)

And if we're talking THE MAN, and the Horsemen, can't leave out Johnny Cash; WHEN THE MAN COMES AROUND
