Battle of the Bands ~ Landslide

It's time for another round of Battle of the Bands. As I was contemplating what song to use, as well as covers of that song, I realized that I'd not yet used Landslide. It's one of those songs that's been on my list of possible songs since this whole thing started. Of course, the problem is contenders. Using Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, or Stevie Nicks with Lindsay Buckingham feels very much like a shutout waiting to happen. OR a very lopsided vote.

Some of you may know that the Dixie Chicks also scored with this song, but probably less of you have heard it. So, I decided to use their cover (which was a hit for them) against another cover that I think is very good. Now, I've noticed that sometimes what I think is very good doesn't always translate well here. Hmm. It's probably better I don't dwell on that overly long.

This version appeals to me because of the harmonies and differing instruments (yeah, I said the instruments), but mostly the harmonies. Here are the Dixie Chicks singing Landslide.

Or, perhaps you like a male perspective? Or an acoustic one? I like both. And Bush singing Landslide.

Now is the fun part. You get to vote in the comments on the version you prefer. Will it be Dixie Chicks or Bush. Cast your vote. You can even tell me WHY you prefer one over the other. I like long comments.

  1. The ladies have great voices but there's just enough twang that it doesn't work for me. However, I do appreciate a good acoustic (and enjoy playing them) and Bush's singer sings the song straight and clear. Bush gets my vote.

  2. This song holds a special memory for me--especially the Dixie Chicks version. Back a number of years ago my daughters and a niece put together a singing group for their annual family Christmas presentation (they did something for us every year). This particular year they put together their own version of this song and did it quite beautifully. They don't do their little family shows anymore, but now they have a crop of grandchildren who I would expect will eventually start doing something similar.

The version by Bush was fine, but I've gotta go with the harmonies and wonderful sounding instrumentation of the Dixie Chicks and company.

Thanks for the memories. A big vote for Dixie Chicks.

    1. I know you like your fiddle (and other instruments). Not at all surprised you voted for the girls.

Funny, today I'm also using a song that had been on my "To BOTB Someday" list from the beginning, also!

And, good decision not to run with Stevie Nicks on this one. I've found that one can get away with using an "original artist" on a song in BOTB, but ONLY if the song was NOT a hit for the original artist. If it was, you're just begging for a shutout, or blowout at the very best. And it doesn't even matter how great the competitor's cover is. (I'm thinking of ZZ Top and Bocephus. I learned my lesson, finally, from THAT particular Battle that FAE staged. Never again!)

I've always liked this song, and I thought both recordings were good. But for the second time today, I'm doing the unusual and siding with the female vocalist(s) over the male singer. Generally, I lean the other way -- just prefer deeper voices -- but here's another exception to that rule o' thumb.

This played no part in my voting, but... down with male hair buns! Yuck! What ever happened to "men"?

    1. I know you tend to do go for male voices. I thought you might like the harmonies and instrumentation of the chicks.

I agree. Down with male hair buns.

Many of us remember the flap over the post-9/11 Iraq War and the Dixie Chicks / George W. Bush controversy. My brother, Nappy, asked me if you had deliberately put the Dixie Chicks up against "Bush".

Pretty humorously ironic! I told Nappy I didn't think it was by design, but I'll let YOU answer that.

  4. I thought I'd vote for the Dixie Chicks until I started playing Bush. I was taken by his sound immediately. That hushed-voice quality does something to me. I vote for Bush.

  5. When I saw the title, I just knew you would be using the Dixie Chicks. I have to say that I am not fond of them as a group, not because of their musical abilities, but for other reasons.

Gavin Rossdale does a great job with this acoustic. The original is also an acoustic. I think that while the Dixie Chicks sound good as a whole, for this song Gavin does the most justice.

My vote: Gavin Rossdale of Bush

    1. I hear you about the Chicks. Ironically, they were just before their time in terms of using their celebrity to push a political opinion. Had they said something today, they would have been praised by the media. Not sure how that would've gone over with country radio. However, there is a big disconnect between the celebrities (and the media) and the actual people who buy/use/watch their product. Ironically, they don't seem to understand that the more they talk (or protest in crazy ways) the less we want to buy/use/watch (listen to) their stuff. Crazy times we live in...

  6. The Dixie Chicks have more than one tune in their catalog that I love ("You Were Mine," "Without You"...I'd name more, but I just realized I'm a sappy little so and so). Some of their tunes, however, have this whining quality...it's subtle and I can't really put my finger on when it's too much...but in this case, it swung my vote over to Bush.

And speaking of Bush, I'd never heard this version, but I really love it. Besides aforementioned sappy-soaked preferences, add acoustic guitar enthusiast.

Bush...but mainly Gavin! Can the two entities be separated? Ha ha.

    1. I think that on some songs Natalie doesn't rein in her twang quite enough. She has a strong (incredible) voice.

I don't think the two entities can be separated;)

  8. Robin,

I prefer male vocals generally over female voices and with this song cover there's no exception. I like Bush far better than the Dixie Chicks. Beautiful song!

  9. The Dixie Chicks were a little twangy for my taste, but I can still appreciate the beauty. I had never heard the Bush version and did like it better. Mainly though, I just really want to listen to some Fleetwood Mac right now! ;)

  12. Hi Robin,
This was a really fabulous battle. I LOVE this song. When I hear Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac doing this, they just take me away to some far away place and I feel so fluid and warm.
Bush's version did that for me too. Gavin's vocals are perfect for this song. I thought I'd be voting for the Dixie Chicks because I do adore their harmonies and they do a fantastic job with this cover but Gavin/Bush just really brought it home...to me anyway.
    Bush gets my vote.

    Awesome battle.
    Have a great week,

Can the Chicks recover any momentum before the clock runs out???

  14. I liked the Dixie Chicks version a lot more than I thought I would. They really do have great voices, something that I probably didn't appreciate more when listening to their more country oriented songs (of which, I'll admit, I'm not a fan).

Sadly... it's not quite enough to steal the vote from Bush, man bun and all. Gavin delivers an excellent rendition. Give my vote to him/them.
