MY LIFE ACCORDING TO TRAIN

Debbie at The Doglady's Den is the brains behind this fantastic list. Is it a meme or a list? I'm a bit confused. Anyway, there are questions to be answered using the names of songs by one artist.

I thought long and hard about this one. There were several artists I could use. I love Mary Chapin Carpenter, and she nearly got the honors.

I still love you, Mary!

Alas, that didn't happen. Here is my life according to...

Yep. These guys:

TRAIN!

  1. This is very fun and funny with the song titles people pick. Some titles are perfect also

I'm not entirely sure what you look like from the front, but I gotta tell ya, from the back (that photo of you in the TRAIN T-shirt), that's a pretty sexy back! Dang!

TRAIN is one of the best Rock 'N' Roll band names ever! And I liked all three of the songs you posted here. Except that lyrically 'Breakfast In Bed' is kind of a mess. The melody and music was good, but they might have wanted to spend more than 3 minutes on the words. "You're better than Punk Rock cred"? Really?! It was already bad, but with that it got horrible and then somehow it got even worse. Drunk out of my mind, with 5 minutes and a pencil in bed, I could write better lyrics than "Breakfast In Bed".

However, otherwise, I thought the song was pretty good, and I really liked the first two in their entirety.

So... I'm interested. Which TRAIN album would you recommend I add to my Spotify account first?

    1. Let me tell you a Train story.

Back in 2004 my then-husband wanted to go to every concert he could. My migraines were raging, and this usually was met with a bit of disdain on my part. However, in the summer of 2004 this band called Train was coming to our town playing FOR FREE at the local army base. It was standing room only (or bring your lawn chair). At that point in time, I was vaguely familiar with them. They'd had two popular songs (Meet Virginia and Drops of Jupiter), and I liked them both. SO... we're standing there and they come on. OMGoodness. They were touring for their My Private Nation album, and I think I was "sold" when they started singing All American Girl. Plus, Pat (the lead singer) is a funny, funny guy and the bits in between the songs were awesome. By the time they sang When I Look To The Sky I was done in. I made my way over to the T-shirt booth and bought me a shirt (that would be the one in the photo above). My hubby didn't buy a T-shirt, and never did embrace Train like I did. ha!

That picture was taken in 2011 or 2012 (my mind is going) when they toured for their album California 37. I went to see them in Atlanta and was pleased as punch to wear my 2004 concert T. Of course, I was very sick at that time (weighed probably 100 pounds) and the only way I could tolerate that concert was because it was outside at Chastain Park in Atlanta, which is a wonderful concert venue (unless it rains).

I love all of their albums, but I admit being partial to that which made me fall in love: My Private Nation. On this list, the songs All American Girl, I'm About To Come Alive, My Private Nation, and Calling All Angels are all from that album. When I Look To The Sky is probably still my favorite Train song of all time. Of course, it may not be your cup of joe at all (these sorts of things are hard to predict). But, that's where I'd begin.

Now, I'm curious as to how this all pans out!

    2. I should add that the song Drops of Jupiter was written by Pat after having this dream about his mother who'd recently passed away. It ended up being a huge hit for them, which he's said in interviews gives him great pleasure. Even though she passed, she was so important to him, and she helped him become successful in the only way she could (a dream). You can listen to that one here:

Pat calls the song You Can Finally Meet My Mom the follow-up to Drops of Jupiter. It came out maybe ten years later??? on the album California 37. I really like it, too:

    3. Thanks, GIRL WONDER! I just added 'MY PRIVATE NATION' to my Spotify account and I'm listening to it right now.

And will check out the other songs you've mentioned as well. So, they're from Northern California, eh? Is this your favorite band ever? It seems like you've mentioned them more than anyone else.

    4. Pat is actually from PA and is the youngest child of seven. He did one solo album called Last of Seven.

Is Train my favorite band? Hmmm. Favorite is such a strong word. I really like Train. I think they are my favorite current band. I don't think I can say they are my favorite band of all time. I'm not sure I could pick a favorite band or singer of all time. I just like too many...

  4. Not surprising that you would pick these guys, lol! I did mine on ELO a few days back, and it's lots of fun, ain't it? We even had a few chuckles doing one (not to be published) for Laurie with The Monkees!

  5. Train makes sense for your pick. It's been interesting to see who picked who. The titles you picked made for some very good answers.

  7. Robin, nice touch! Despite Train's popularity, I know very few of their songs so it was nice to sample a few from your Q&A session. See ya tomorrow for BoTB!

  9. I only know a few of Train's songs. Ironically, I think I do own one of their CD's. I own so many, sometimes I forget.
    Great answers.

  10. No surprise here, in that you would pick Train. Best answer, IMO; 'Where do you live? Mr Private Nation.' Good song and a perfect fit.
