If you ever wanted to look me in the eye
Okay, so I had this strange dream Monday that I was singing in a public bathroom. I was just getting into the song when another voice that sounded very much like me joined in. That person sang from the safety of the stall. While we were singing people started filtering in. Most of them I knew from various phases of my life, but some were strangers to me. At some point, I realized that the person in the stall was me. Just a younger version of me. Weird? Yes. Enough to make me quit singing? No. I continued to sing by the sink, while she carried on from her place in the stall until we finished the song. And then everyone clapped. I felt afraid, but very accomplished at the end.
It was a song that I have always liked, but it is too high for me to really sound good. I do better with lower songs IMO. I spent days ruminating on this one. I decided it was about stepping outside your comfort zone. Even though I sing karaoke, and sometimes badly, I am still doing it in a forum where people are expecting singing. It is safe to say that a public restroom is not that forum.
Here is the song by Suzy Bogguss. It has been recorded by numerous folks. However, if you want to skip it, you can. I recorded a VLog that I intended to be short. Well, short for me. I had a terrible time figuring out how to do it at all. Then, I couldn't figure out how to edit it. Ugghh. I was shooting for five minutes. Ten minutes max. And this is what I got. Hand smacking forehead.
However, it is likely the most insightful Daily Dose of Robin you will ever get. For.What.That's.Worth. I guess for $.50 it will get you a gumball.

ReplyDeleteI am coming back to listen to your whole vlog when I have time to really focus on it. But I am tell you this. I am proud of you. You put yourself out there in a big way. Congratulations girl!
Hi Robin-
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that this was one of your most open and honest posts- it just 'sounded' like your real voice, even before I got down to the vlog part.
You look good. More energetic and happy than when we met. Don't get me wrong. I knew you were not at your best that day and you were valiant in your effort to be present and fun and yet your energy was a bit sapped for obvious reasons. So it's good to see you looking good and it seems you are ready to be free of some things.
I enjoy certain freedoms by remaining more anonymous with my blog, but I do admire your openness today. Good for you!
I watched it. I even sang along. This WAS brave. You demonstrated your strength. Hold on to the memory of how you stepped up and challenged yourself, Robin. It was a good thing.
ReplyDeleteGreat posting, and great video blog. I can say that was brave, something I never even considered, mainly because that would be way outta my comfort zone for sure.
ReplyDeleteI love the vlog!!! It is SO cool to see you - you! - and to hear your words and your voice; an entirely different experience from reading. So warm, so wonderful! And I think the dream about the song ... well, I don't have enough time or space at the moment, but the Cliff's Notes version is that you still have a song to sing. Yes, your health is compromised. Yes, you've got too much stress and not enough joy. But you still have a dream - literally and otherwise. You still have a song to sing. Some of what you have to say needs to stay private, but you have a message to carry to others, a message that they need to hear. There are also things you still want to say to those you've known in your life, and in our dreams they can hear them. But your message goes beyond that - there are people who will carry it out beyond the confines ....
ReplyDeleteOh sweet Robin...you my friend are certainly brave...among whole bunch of other positive things. I just wanted to pull you through the screen and give you a big fat hug when I was watching this video. So true, so raw, so Robin....one of the things I've always admired about you....Luv ya girl...~Hugs, xoxo
